Childhood Delight and Harmony — Mid-Qing Pair of Standing Screens with Baibao Inlay Depicting Boys a

Collection|Special Exhibition
AD 1644 - 1911
The central panels depict boys at play in a courtyard. Buildings, pavilions and verandas nestle among leafy trees and flowering plants. Lush greenery and flowing water animate the garden, while subtle contrasts of colour distinguish the trees and shrubs, their branches rising and bending in natural poses.

The boys engage in a variety of activities: dancing with a dragon lantern, watching fish, looking through picture albums, enjoying the fragrance of flowers, studying, or dressing up as officials. Laughing and playing together, they fill the scene with exuberant energy, as though their voices and laughter could be heard beyond the panels. Each child has an individual expression, gaze and posture, rendered with remarkable liveliness. The patterns and folds of their clothing are meticulously worked and finely carved. Their animated poses and playful activities convey an engaging sense of childhood delight.

The decorative composition adopts the shifting viewpoints of traditional Chinese painting, bringing different angles and perspectives together on a single pictorial surface and emphasizing linear structure. The children are modelled according to traditional proportional conventions: seven head-lengths for a walking figure, five for a seated figure, four for a running figure, and three and a half for a cross-legged figure. Their rounded bodies also express the traditional observation that children have no pronounced waist. Throughout the surrounding garden and architecture, line defines form, and form conveys spirit.
