A Gentle Breeze beneath the Sleeve: Armrests and Painting Weights
Collection|Antique Collection
AD 1644 - 1911
In the world of the Qing scholar’s studio, armrests and painting weights were practical desk accessories as well as expressions of artistic taste and accomplished craftsmanship. This exhibition, introduced in the Chinese text as Between Brushstrokes, focuses on fine Qing examples and explores their supporting roles in calligraphy and painting, together with their cultural associations. Armrests supported the forearm during writing, while painting weights held paper and scrolls flat. Their designs combined practical considerations with delicate workmanship and artistic beauty. Through these objects, visitors can explore the cultivated pleasures of the Qing scholar’s studio and appreciate the quiet refinement of accessories that accompanied the arts of the brush. (73)
